Introduction

And we're back! New adventures, which means more self-indulgent writing.

In September of last year I visited a friend up in Denali National Park. We went for a hike led by Ranger Nick, and at some point, he was asked a question. He paused for awhile, and then said "Okay, I have two options here: I can tell you honestly that I don't know, and go do some research and give you a truthful answer later, or I can tell you an outrageous ranger lie right now."

And that's how I discovered my dream job.

Four months or so later, I was hired to be a National Park Ranger at Katmai National Park in Alaska. Then the Coronavirus pandemic hit, because my luck may not be good, but it is certainly consistent, and I spent months worrying that I'd miss out on the whole scheme. 

Now it's June, and I've finally made it, at least as far as King Salmon, Alaska.

Welcome to my latest misadventures, this time as a National Park Ranger.

Dumpling Mountain

Dumpling is about the only hike you can do on a single-day trip to Katmai, because it's relatively close to Brooks Camp (whereas the Valley hikes are 20-something miles in before you even GET there) and is only about four and a half miles each way, with an elevation gain of somewhere around 2,300 feet. Katmai Art Show

Flyer by Rylee     Covid precautions meant that most of the Katmai traditions had to be skipped this year. We'd had a Fourth of July party outside, but had almost immediately been read the riot act about large gatherings. Fancy First Fridays (when everyone who is off duty gets all dolled up and hangs out on the first Friday of each month) were still sort of happening, though not on the usual scale, and Cheryl and I had missed almost all of them. Katmai Halloween fell on a day during the park shutdown, so anyone who was IN the park was pretty much under house arrest in their cabins. It had been a rather depressing year for any park employee who thrived in social settings.      To lift spirits, LE Mike decided we should have an art show. Tammy-Led Adventures

     I should probably start off by explaining what a Tammy-Led Adventure is: It's exactly what it sounds like. You go somewhere with Tammy, and whatever she suggests, you just go along with.  If she says "let's walk in the river" you walk in the river. If she says "let's bushwhack through the Jurassic Park Swamp" you lose your boots in the mud. If she says "let's go that way" and that way is clearly the most difficult route, you hike up your waders a little further and you go. It's madness, but any good adventure is.     So who is Tammy? The official answer is she's Katmai's Bear Monitor. The unofficial answer is she's Tammy, Queen of the Bears. Tammy knows the bears at Katmai probably better than she knows her actual human coworkers.
